Polytrichum commune is a species of moss found in regions with high humidity and rainfall. It can be exceptionally tall for a moss, with stems often exceeding 30 centimeters and rarely reaching 70 centimeters, though it is most commonly found at shorter lengths of 5 to 10 centimeters. It is widely distributed across temperate and boreal latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, and also grows in Mexico, several Pacific islands including New Zealand, and Australia, typically in bogs, wet heathland, and along forest streams.
