Powdery mildews make up the family Erysiphaceae, ascomycete fungi whose members are obligate parasites of plants. A powdery mildew infection forms a superficial mycelium across the surface of a host plant's leaves and stems, producing the characteristic white, powdery coating that gives the disease its common name.
