The red-vented bulbul is a member of the bulbul family of songbirds, a resident breeder across South Asia east to Myanmar that has since established introduced populations in Argentina, Tonga, Fiji, parts of Samoa, the United States and the Cook Islands. It is included on the list of the world's hundred worst invasive alien species, and although a targeted extermination campaign removed it from New Zealand in 1955, isolated sightings there are still reported.
