The ruffed grouse (Bonasa umbellus) is a medium-sized grouse found in forests from the Appalachian Mountains across Canada to Alaska, and is the most widely distributed game bird in North America, as well as the state game bird of Pennsylvania. It is non-migratory and the sole member of its genus, and despite being sometimes called a partridge, it is unrelated to true partridges. It was first described by Carl Linnaeus in 1766, originally as Tetrao umbellus, and is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN.
