Sand dollars are flattened, disc-shaped marine animals related to sea urchins and sea stars, living just beneath the surface of sandy seafloors in coastal waters worldwide. Their five-part, petal-shaped pattern of pores on the upper shell, used for respiration, is a visible echo of the five-fold body plan shared by all echinoderms. After death, their bleached, disc-like skeletons commonly wash up on beaches and are a familiar beachcombing find.
