Sawflies are a group of insects in the suborder Symphyta within the order Hymenoptera, distinguished from wasps, bees and ants by a broad waist rather than the narrow constriction typical of the rest of the order. The common name refers to the saw-like ovipositor that females of many species use to cut slits into plant tissue in which to lay their eggs, and the caterpillar-like larvae of most species feed externally on leaves, sometimes causing significant damage to trees and crops.
