Scathophaga stercoraria, commonly known as the yellow dung fly or golden dung fly, is one of the most familiar and abundant flies across much of the Northern Hemisphere. It breeds in the dung of large animals such as horses and cattle, and its presence is shaped significantly by agricultural practices, particularly in northern Europe and North America. The fly plays an ecological role in decomposing animal waste and is a widely used research subject in behavioral science because of its rapid development cycle and suitability for experimental study.
