Silky Forklet-moss

Silky forklet-moss, Dicranella heteromalla, is a moss of the family Dicranaceae forming dense yellow-green to mid-green cushions or patches up to three centimeters deep, with narrow leaves that curve to point in one direction when moist and change little when dry. It is a ubiquitous moss of acidic soils, especially common on woodland banks, tree stumps, tree roots and hedge banks, and its dense, matted rhizoid system is adapted mainly for absorbing water and nutrients from the soil rather than for anchorage.
