Sockeye Salmon

The sockeye salmon, also called red salmon, kokanee salmon or blueback salmon, is an anadromous species of salmon found in the northern Pacific Ocean and the rivers that drain into it. It is primarily red in hue during spawning, can grow up to eighty-four centimeters long and weigh two point three to seven kilograms, and its diet consists mainly of zooplankton. Juveniles remain in fresh water until they migrate to the ocean, sometimes over distances of up to sixteen hundred kilometers, and the species is semelparous, dying after spawning, though some populations, called kokanee, never migrate to the ocean and live their entire lives in fresh water.
