Walleye

Fish

A freshwater fish native to most of Canada and the northern United States. It is largely olive and gold in color, with a large, sharply toothed mouth and pearlescent eyes produced by a reflective layer called the tapetum lucidum. It typically grows to about 80 centimeters and 9 kilograms, with the largest recorded specimen reaching 107 centimeters and 13 kilograms, and lives in lakes and rivers, favoring deeper water in warm summers and tolerating turbid or stained water. Young walleye eat invertebrates before becoming almost entirely fish eaters after forty to sixty days, taking yellow perch and ciscoes along with crayfish, minnows and leeches.

Hubbs described a taxon called the blue walleye (S. glaucus) from the Great Lakes but subsequent taxonomic work showed no consistent differences between this form and the "yellow" walleye and the blue walleye is now considered to be a synonym and color variant of the walleye.
