Spittlebug

Spittlebugs, also called froghoppers, are insects of the superfamily Cercopoidea whose nymphs produce and surround themselves with a frothy, foam-like mass of spittle on plant stems, which hides and protects them from predators and prevents them from drying out while they feed on plant sap. Adults lose the spittle covering and are capable of extraordinary jumps relative to their size, and some species are of agricultural concern as vectors of the bacterial plant pathogen Xylella fastidiosa.
