Springy turf-moss, Rhytidiadelphus squarrosus, is a moss of the family Hylocomiaceae that forms an extensive mat of branching stems up to fifteen centimeters tall, with leaves that bend sharply backward at a right angle to the stem, giving mats a distinctively rough, star-like texture underfoot. It rarely produces spore capsules, spreading mostly by vegetative fragmentation, and is the most common moss found in lawns in the United Kingdom, thriving especially in heavily grazed pasture and closely mown turf such as golf course fairways; it has a circumpolar Northern Hemisphere distribution and has also been introduced to Tasmania and New Zealand.
