Stoneflies make up the insect order Plecoptera, with about 3,500 described species found worldwide except Antarctica, and new species still being discovered. They are considered one of the most primitive living groups of Neoptera, with close relatives known from fossils of the Carboniferous and Lower Permian periods, although true stoneflies themselves appear somewhat later in the fossil record. Most of the group's modern diversity is thought to have originated during the Mesozoic era.
