Box Jellyfish

Cnidarians

The box jellyfish is a group of highly venomous marine cnidarians found mainly in the warm coastal waters of the Indo-Pacific region, including waters off northern Australia and Southeast Asia, named for the distinctive cube-shaped bell that sets them apart from other jellyfish. Unlike most jellyfish, box jellyfish are active, capable swimmers with a set of eyes clustered on each side of the bell that can detect light, shapes and movement, allowing them to actively avoid obstacles and pursue small fish and crustaceans. Long, trailing tentacles armed with millions of stinging cells deliver a venom that, in the most dangerous species such as the Australian box jellyfish, can cause severe pain and, in rare cases, be fatal to humans within minutes, making it among the most venomous marine animals known. Box jellyfish typically hunt in shallow coastal waters during warmer months, prompting seasonal beach closures and the wearing of protective stinger suits in some affected regions. Vinegar is commonly used as a first-aid treatment for stings from certain box jellyfish species, as it helps deactivate unfired stinging cells still attached to the skin.
