Most gulls were historically placed in this genus until taxonomic revision around 2005 to 2007 showed the arrangement was polyphyletic, leading to the resurrection of several other genera; the genus now contains 25 extant species according to the IOC World Bird List. The type species is the great black-backed gull, Larus marinus; members are medium to large birds, typically pale grey to black above and white below, with stout bills and webbed feet.FactsLarusConnectionsIn the Other AtlasesSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsClassificationLiving or ExtinctWell-attestedYes 1Taxonomic RankWell-attestedGenus 2LarusFilter Results5 entriesCommon GroupAllGulls, Terns And Auks (5)HabitatAllBog (1)Estuary (2)Intertidal Zone (2)Lake (4)Neritic Zone (2)Riparian Zone (2)River (1)Tundra (1)Conservation StatusAllLeast Concern (5)EcosystemAllCaspian Sea (1)Great Lakes (1)Moorland (1)Everyday GroupAllGulls, Terns And Auks (5)DietAllCarnivore (3)Detritivore or Scavenger (2)System (Realm)AllFreshwater (2)Marine (5)Terrestrial (5)Relationship to PeopleAllAgricultural or Structural Pest (2)Hunted or Fished (1)Living or ExtinctAllYes (5)Where It LivesAllAfrica (2)Australia (1)Belgium (5)Brazil (1)Canada (1)Colombia (3)Denmark (5)Djibouti (2)Ecuador (2)Eritrea (2)Europe (1)France (5)Iceland (1)Ireland (3)Kenya (2)Mozambique (1)North America (5)Norway (5)Poland (5)Russia (3)South Africa (1)South Asia (1)Spain (5)Sweden (5)Tanzania (2)Ukraine (1)United Kingdom (1)United States (4)Venezuela (2)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 5Common gullLarusEuropean herring gullLarusGlaucous GullLarusGreat black-backed gullLarusLesser black-backed gullLarusConnectionsParent Taxon OfCommon gull, Species Well-attested Source Common gull (Wikidata)tier 2European herring gull, Species Well-attested Source Larus argentatus (Wikidata)tier 2Glaucous Gull, Species Well-attested Source Glaucous Gull (Wikidata)tier 2Great black-backed gull, Species Well-attested Source Great black-backed gull (Wikidata)tier 2Lesser black-backed gull, Species Well-attested Source Lesser black-backed gull (Wikidata)tier 2In the Other AtlasesFound InBrazilAlso in Geography Atlas: where this subject is found.Sources1.
