The tomato is a plant whose fruit is an edible berry eaten as a vegetable. It is a member of the nightshade family, which also includes tobacco, potato, and chili peppers. It originated in western South America and may have been domesticated there, in Mexico, or in Central America, and the Spanish introduced it to Eurasia during the Columbian exchange in the sixteenth century.
