Toxoplasma gondii is a single-celled parasitic protist capable of infecting nearly all warm-blooded animals but able to complete its full sexual reproductive cycle only inside the intestine of a cat. Human infection, causing the disease toxoplasmosis, is extremely common worldwide and usually produces no symptoms in healthy adults, but it poses a serious risk to a developing fetus if a woman is first infected during pregnancy, and to people with weakened immune systems.
