Vampire crabs, genus Geosesarma, are small, brightly colored, mostly purple or violet freshwater and land-dwelling crabs native to Southeast Asian rainforests, named for their striking coloration and bright yellow eyes rather than any blood-feeding habit. Unlike most crabs, which need the sea to complete their life cycle, vampire crabs have fully broken free of it, laying eggs that hatch directly into miniature crabs rather than free-swimming larvae, an adaptation that has made them popular in the freshwater aquarium and terrarium trade.
