Vent Shrimp

The vent shrimp lives in dense, swarming colonies clustered directly around deep hydrothermal vents along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, at depths of well over a thousand meters where sunlight never reaches. It lacks the normal stalked eyes seen in most shrimp, but carries a unique light sensitive organ on its back believed to detect the faint thermal glow given off by the scalding vent fluid, helping it navigate close to the vents without being killed by the heat. Rather than feeding on food gathered from its surroundings, it depends on chemosynthetic bacteria that it cultivates inside an enlarged gill chamber, harvesting the bacteria's own energy production for nutrition instead of eating externally sourced food. Vast swarms of the species, sometimes numbering in the thousands per square meter, blanket the rock surfaces immediately around active vents, making it one of the most visually striking features of these deep sea ecosystems. It is entirely dependent on the chemical energy and mineral rich fluid produced by the vents, and cannot survive away from this narrow and unusual habitat. Its discovery helped establish hydrothermal vent communities as one of the few ecosystems on Earth that function without any direct reliance on sunlight.
