Wakame, Undaria pinnatifida, is a species of edible brown algae native to the cold coastal waters of Japan, Korea and China, distinguished by its deeply divided, feather-like fronds. Long cultivated in East Asia for food, most familiarly in miso soup and seaweed salad, it has also become established as an invasive species in parts of Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand after being introduced through shipping and aquaculture, where its fast growth allows it to crowd out native marine vegetation.
