Daphnia is a genus of small planktonic crustaceans ranging from 0.2 to 6.0 millimetres in length, in the order Anomopoda, commonly called water fleas for the jumping style of swimming that resembles a flea's movement. They live in a range of freshwater habitats, including acidic swamps, lakes and ponds, and the genus includes more than 200 species, the most common being Daphnia pulex and the larger Daphnia magna, with Daphnia pulicaria often confused with D. pulex because of their similar appearance and their ability to produce hybrid offspring.
