Webspinners are small, gregarious insects of the order Embioptera, found mainly in tropical and subtropical regions, named for their habit of spinning silk from glands in their swollen front legs to build tunnel-like galleries under bark, leaf litter and stones. They live colonially within these silk tunnels, which shelter them from predators and weather while they feed on plant material such as moss, lichen and dead leaves, and in most species only the males develop wings.
