Camellia sinensis

Flowering Plants

Camellia sinensis is a flowering plant in the family Theaceae, the species from which all tea is produced. It likely originated in the borderlands of far eastern India, north Myanmar and southwestern China, with its native range recorded across southcentral and southwest China, Assam and the eastern Himalayas, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. The plant is a woody shrub or tree typically 1 to 5 meters tall, though it can reach 20 meters in the wild; commercial plantations trim it to about 1 meter with a flat top. Its leathery, elliptic to oblong leaves run 4 to 22 centimeters long, and it bears small white flowers 2.5 to 3.5 centimeters across with six to eight petals, followed by globe-shaped capsular fruits. White, yellow, green, oolong, dark and black tea are all made from two cultivated varieties of this species, var. sinensis and var. assamica, with China, India and Kenya the three largest producing countries.
