Peganum harmala

Flowering Plants

Peganum harmala, widely known as wild rue or Syrian rue, is a perennial herbaceous plant in the family Nitrariaceae. It grows from a woody underground rootstock and is typically found in saline soils across temperate desert and Mediterranean regions. Its English name reflects a resemblance to rue, though the two are not closely related. The plant's seeds carry a high concentration of beta-carboline alkaloids.
