Dusky dolphin

Mammals

The dusky dolphin (Aethalodelphis obscurus) is a small oceanic dolphin of the Southern Hemisphere's coastal waters, most closely related to the Pacific white-sided dolphin. New Zealand dolphins typically measure 165 to 178 centimeters and weigh 69 to 85 kilograms, while some Peruvian animals reach up to 206 centimeters; it has a stocky body, a short beak, a curved dorsal fin and flippers, and a pattern of black upper body and beak, light gray face and flanks, and a white underside. Its range is patchy across the Southern Hemisphere, including the coasts of South America and southwestern Africa, New Zealand and various oceanic islands, generally in cool currents over the inshore continental shelf. It feeds on fish such as anchovies, lantern fish and hakes along with squid, using tactics that include herding bait balls by day and feeding on deep scattering layers by night, and lives in flexible groups that can gather into large aggregations.
