Lagenorhynchus is a genus of oceanic dolphin, family Delphinidae, that formerly contained six living species but is now known to be polyphyletic, with molecular evidence moving several species to other genera and leaving only the white-beaked dolphin as its sole extant member; an extinct species, Lagenorhynchus harmatuki, is also classified in the genus. The name derives from Greek words for bottle and beak, referring to the short, thick beak characteristic of the genus, though the unrelated bottlenose dolphins take their common name from the genus Tursiops instead. Molecular studies place the white-beaked dolphin, along with the Atlantic white-sided dolphin, as phylogenetically isolated, relatively basal members of Delphinidae near the orca.
