Juniperus horizontalis, the creeping juniper or creeping cedar, is a low, spreading conifer in the cypress family Cupressaceae, native across most of Canada from Yukon to Newfoundland and parts of the United States from Alaska and Montana east to Maine, with its southernmost populations in Wyoming and northern Illinois. True to its name, it stays only 10 to 30 centimeters tall while spreading several meters wide, with scale-like leaves 1 to 2 millimeters long arranged in opposite pairs. Its berry-like cones, 5 to 7 millimeters across, are dark blue with a pale waxy bloom, usually holding two seeds and taking about 18 months to mature. It often hybridizes with Juniperus virginiana where their ranges overlap in southern Canada, and occasionally with Juniperus scopulorum.
