Salvia verticillata

Flowering Plants

Salvia verticillata, known as lilac sage or whorled clary, is a herbaceous perennial in the family Lamiaceae, first described by Carl Linnaeus in 1753. It is native to a wide area stretching from central Europe to western Asia, and has naturalized in northern Europe and North America. The plant forms a leafy base of mid-green, hairy leaves and sends up leaf-covered stems bearing inflorescences up to 3 feet tall, with tiny lavender flowers packed into whorls above lime-green and purple calyces.
