Ribes sanguineum

Flowering Plants

Ribes sanguineum, the flowering currant or red-flowering currant, is a deciduous shrub in the family Grossulariaceae, native to western North America along the coastal ranges of British Columbia, Washington and Oregon, with populations extending south to Santa Barbara County in California and a possibly extirpated population on Guadalupe Island in Mexico. It grows to about 3 meters tall and wide with multiple upright-arching to rounded stems and dark brownish-grey bark marked by lighter lenticels. Its alternate, palmately five-lobed leaves span 2 to 7 centimeters and smell strongly resinous when young. In early spring it produces dangling racemes of 5 to 30 flowers, each 5 to 10 millimeters across with five petals in shades of red, pink or white.
