Wollemi Pine is the sole known species in the monotypic conifer genus Wollemia, one of only three living genera in the family Araucariaceae along with Araucaria and Agathis. It was not discovered until 1994, when it was found growing in a remote series of narrow, steep-sided sandstone gorges about 150 kilometers northwest of Sydney, within Wollemi National Park in New South Wales, the park from which the genus takes its name.
