The planet scale cycles that move a chemical element or compound between the atmosphere, ocean, land and living organisms: the carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and water cycles. Each is a closed loop with reservoirs and transfer rates rather than a single event, and each underwrites the processes described in the other phenomenon groups.
