Ascidiacea, the ascidians or sea squirts, is a class of sac like marine filter feeding invertebrates in the subphylum Tunicata, now regarded as paraphyletic rather than a single natural lineage. They are distinguished by a tough outer covering called the tunic, made of the polysaccharide cellulose, and they feed by filtering particles from the surrounding seawater.
