Bacillariophyceae is a class of diatoms, single celled photosynthetic algae with silica cell walls. The name was once used for all diatoms, but since 2019 diatom diversity has been split across several classes, and Bacillariophyceae was redefined more narrowly to cover diatoms with a bipolar valve outline organized bilaterally around an elongated central rib.
