Charophyceae is a class of charophyte green algae placed by AlgaeBase within the division Charophyta. Living species are grouped into a single order, Charales, commonly known as stoneworts and brittleworts, while fossil members are placed in separate orders such as Sycidiales. The class is basal within the Phragmoplastophyta clade, which also contains the land plants, and in 2018 the first nuclear genome sequence from a species in the class, Chara braunii, was published.
