The sea lilies and feather stars: the most ancient surviving echinoderm class, filter-feeders with feathery, branching arms surrounding an upward-facing mouth, some species permanently attached to the sea floor by a stalk. Crinoidea was vastly more diverse in the Paleozoic era, when stalked forms covered large areas of shallow sea floor.
