Demospongiae, the demosponges or common sponges, is the class within the phylum Porifera that contains the great majority of living sponges, more than 90 percent of roughly 8800 described species. Their skeletons are typically built from a meshwork of spongin protein fibers, silica spicules, or both, and unlike glass sponges their silica spicules take a different range of shapes; some Antarctic demosponges obtain the silica for their spicules by eating diatoms.
