Halobacteria, more accurately called Haloarchaea, is a class of archaea within the phylum Euryarchaeota, found in water that is saturated or nearly saturated with salt. It is one of the largest groups of archaea. The name Halobacteria was assigned to this group before the domain Archaea itself was recognized, and though still valid under taxonomic rules, is now considered outdated; halophilic archaea are generally called haloarchaea to distinguish them from unrelated halophilic bacteria.
