The monocotyledons ('monocots'): flowering plants whose embryos carry a single seed leaf (cotyledon) on germination, typically with parallel-veined leaves, flower parts in multiples of three, and a fibrous root system. Liliopsida includes the grasses (and therefore wheat, rice, corn and every other cereal crop), palms, orchids and lilies.
