Merostomata is a class of chelicerate arthropods containing the extinct order Eurypterida, the so called sea scorpions, and the living order Xiphosura, the horseshoe crabs. The term was originally used by James Dwight Dana to refer only to Xiphosura, and was later broadened by Henry Woodward to cover both groups.
