Methanobacteria is a class of archaea within the domain Archaea. Most members are methanogens, microbes that produce methane as a metabolic byproduct, and they are found in anaerobic environments, including the human colon, where methane output can be measured in breath tests as an indicator of gastrointestinal conditions. Methanobacteria are also used in anaerobic digestion, converting organic waste into biogas for energy production.
