Monoplacophora, a name meaning bearing one plate, is a paraphyletic class of molluscs with a single cap like shell that lives in deep sea environments. Living representatives were not recognized as such until 1952; before that discovery the group was known only from fossils and was thought to have gone extinct around 375 million years ago.
