The chitons: mollusks with a flattened, oval body covered by a shell of eight overlapping calcareous plates, allowing the animal to flex and even curl into a ball when dislodged. Polyplacophora are exclusively marine, grazing algae from rock surfaces in the intertidal zone and shallow subtidal waters.
