Pucciniomycetes is a diverse class of fungi in the subphylum Pucciniomycotina of phylum Basidiomycota, comprising roughly 8,016 species across 5 orders, 21 families and 190 genera. The class is best known for the rust fungi of order Pucciniales, which account for about 7,000 of its species and include many economically damaging plant pathogens, along with teliospore-forming yeasts and species once classified as smuts or jelly fungi. Members occur worldwide in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, though aquatic representatives remain poorly studied.
