Scaphopoda is a class of shelled marine molluscs commonly called tusk shells or tooth shells for the tapering, tube shaped form of their shells. The class has a worldwide distribution and is the only group of molluscs whose members live entirely burrowed within sediment. Shell length ranges from about half a centimeter to eighteen centimeters, with Fissidentalium metivieri the longest known species, and members of the order Dentaliida tend to grow larger than those of the order Gadilida.
