Thermococci is a class of archaea within the Euryarchaeota. Its members live in extremely hot environments such as hydrothermal vents, with optimal growth temperatures around 75 to 85 degrees Celsius, and are obligate anaerobes that obtain energy by breaking down organic compounds. The genera Thermococcus and Pyrococcus, both chemoorganotrophs adapted to deep sea hydrothermal settings, belong to this class; one species, Thermococcus gammatolerans, can survive gamma radiation exposure of 30 kGy, making it a subject of study for DNA repair mechanisms.
