The mosses: small, non-vascular land plants that lack true roots, stems or leaves in the sense vascular plants have them, and that reproduce by spores rather than seeds. Bryophyta plants absorb water and nutrients directly across their surfaces, restricting most species to consistently moist habitats, and they are frequently the first plants to colonize bare rock or disturbed ground.
