The cycads: slow-growing seed plants with a stout, often unbranched trunk topped by a crown of stiff, palm-like leaves, though they are unrelated to true palms. Cycadophyta was far more diverse during the Mesozoic era; the surviving species are concentrated in tropical and subtropical regions and many are now threatened by habitat loss and over-collection.
