The lycophytes (club mosses, spike mosses and quillworts): an ancient lineage of vascular, spore-reproducing plants distinct from ferns, with small, simple leaves called microphylls arranged spirally along the stem. Lycopodiophyta's tree-sized ancestors were dominant components of the coal-forming forests of the Carboniferous period; today's surviving species are small herbaceous plants.
