Buprestidae is a family of beetles in the order Coleoptera known as jewel beetles or metallic wood boring beetles for their glossy, iridescent coloring. The family is among the largest of the beetles, with about 15,500 described species in 775 genera, plus nearly 100 described fossil species, and dates back to the Middle Jurassic. Their larvae are called flatheaded borers, and the colorful wing cases of larger species have traditionally been used in jewelry and decoration in countries including India, Thailand and Japan.
