Chelydridae is a family of turtles within the order Testudines, with seven extinct genera and two extant genera, the snapping turtles Chelydra and Macrochelys. Both living genera are endemic to the Western Hemisphere. The family fossil record extends back to the Late Cretaceous and once ranged across North America, Asia and Europe, well beyond its present range in the Americas.
